Book Cover Branding & Custom Hot Foil Stamps

Choose the look you want

Hot foil stamping: a coloured or metallic logo

A heated die presses stamping foil onto the cover. The foil supplies the colour; this is not a burned mark. It is a useful process to explore for book covers, paper stationery and presentation folders.

Blind debossing: an impression without foil

The logo is pressed into a suitable cover without adding colour. The cover’s surface and backing affect how clearly it holds the impression. A raised embossed design is a different setup and may require a matching counter-die.

Heat branding: a material-dependent mark

Direct heat can change the surface or colour of some materials. Do not treat paper or an unknown synthetic cover like wood: a successful wood-branding setup does not establish a suitable book-cover setting.

Paper, leather and synthetic covers

  • Paper and card: choose a hot stamping foil intended for the particular coated or uncoated stock. Flat support and even contact matter.
  • Leather: hot foil or blind debossing may suit your desired finish. Coatings and leather type influence the result.
  • Book cloth: identify the cloth and any surface coating, then select a foil grade intended for it.
  • Leatherette, PU and vinyl: these names cover different materials. Some synthetic coverings can be hot foil stamped, but that does not make every cover compatible with every foil or tool. Start with the cover supplier’s material information and foil recommendation.

There is no single temperature that we can recommend for all book covers. Follow the foil and material suppliers’ guidance, and establish temperature, pressure and contact time on a spare sample before working on the finished item. Compatibility with your specific paper, vinyl or synthetic cover is not yet established by this guide.

Which tool should you choose?

Already have a press? Our custom brass branding plates are the starting point. Confirm the mounting arrangement and working area before ordering. A die that fits one machine does not automatically fit another.

Starting a small production setup? See our temperature-controlled hot foil press. A press helps position the cover and repeat contact consistently. The plate and any foil required are separate items unless the selected listing says otherwise.

Prefer a handheld tool? Our Professional 500W temperature-controlled branding iron is another option to discuss for compatible applications. It requires manual alignment and pressure; it is not a complete bookbinding foil system.

Order a custom bookbinding die

For a repeated publisher logo, studio mark or fixed title, our custom brass head/plate is the current die-only offer. Choose a plate size that accommodates the finished mark; we review the artwork and confirm the layout in a digital proof. The press, heater and foil are separate.

  1. Choose your finish: foil colour or blind debossing. Tell us the cover stock or book cloth, coating and intended foil grade.
  2. Confirm the holder: send the press make/model, a mounting-area photo and the holder dimensions. Include the required total die height or thickness, hole pattern or clamp arrangement if known.
  3. Use the plate ordering options: select Hot-foil press and your equipment. Where mounting is requested, choose M4 or M8 × 1.25 mm only after matching your actual holder. M4 includes a threaded stud, washer and flange nut.
  4. Send your artwork and desired mark dimensions: a fixed engraved head repeats the same logo or title. Changing names or titles require another die or a separate type-setting arrangement.

For an unknown holder, a side-clamp machine or an uncertain cover material, send your setup for review first. A press model or marketplace listing alone does not verify fit, and this page does not establish a tested setting for a particular vinyl or synthetic cover.

We supply the custom marking tool, not finished branded books.

More about foil and material selection

Foil suppliers distinguish materials and applications rather than prescribing one universal setup. See Foilco’s foil grade and substrate guide and KURZ’s book-cover and graphic substrate applications. These describe the process and foil options, not a compatibility test of our equipment on your cover.
